On March 12, 2021, Taichung City Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Chief of Staff, Mr. Ying-Chih Chiu, and Program Director, Ms. Jeannie Chen, had visited Tunghai University Office of International Relations and signed the MOU between YMCA and THU. This not only helps overseas students to smoothly integrate secondary and primary education, but also promotes leadership training, cultural and learning exchanges between students, and information exchanges on future work-study and internship opportunities through this cooperation.
The Taichung City YMCA is an international organization dedicated to youth training. It provides international students in Taiwan with the opportunity to go help at Taiwanese children’s camp and work with other youngsters during winter and summer vacations. By helping in camp, these international students are able to gain valuable experiences of life in Taiwan, the true Taiwanese spirit and culture while achieving service-learning and cross-cultural understanding.
This year, THU had 10 overseas students participate in YMCA International Volunteer Service Group activities. These students came from different countries: two from Indonesia, two from Malaysia, two from Hong Kong, one from Mongolia, one from Japan, one from Nauru, and one from Tuvalu. Through this activity, overseas students who could not return to their home countries due to the pandemic had challenged themselves, designing interesting activities and sharing during the international sharing time. These not only allowed them to introduce the characteristics of their home country, but also to achieve self-identification and the spirit of international service learning.
