With environmental sustainability in mind, Tunghai University keeps planting trees during the campus Arbor Week around March 12th every year. This year, the Arbor Week started on March 10th with two themes – commemorating late professor Shao-Chen Yang of History Department and transplanting camphor trees by Tunghai alumni. The annual tree-planting activity was supervised by the Campus Greening Committee for choosing tree species, planting areas, and number of trees to plant.
Planting trees in commemoration of History Professor Shao-Chen Yang
In commemoration of their father, Prof. Shao-Chen Yang’s children donated cherry trees for planting. Prof. Yang was one of the founding members of Tunghai Department of History and served as Chair of the Department and as Director of the Institute of History. He lived on campus for years and loved its green environment. The family donated the trees to symbolize Prof. Yang’s long-time devotion to education. The planting event was attended by Tunghai University President Mao-Jiun Wang, College of Arts Dean Stano Kong, Department of History Chair Cheng-Wen Wang, Department Alumni Association Head Shun-De Wen and faculty and students.

The second event was for the Tunghai Alumni Association to plant trees. Alumni from all over the country returned to school to participate in the event. The Stout Camphor trees donated by the Alumni Association and planted on the university’s 60th anniversary have grown tall and were relocated to a wider space in the second teaching area. Besides many former presidents and directors of the association, EMBA alumni as well as outstanding alumni joined the event. The event brought together alumni from different areas with one shared love toward their alma mater and the green campus in their young memories.
